Does reacting with sadness and crying to a broken engagement, the insult of the other party, and the loss of an uncle, deprive one of the reward for tribulation, and what should the questioner do if she regrets breaking off the engagement?

A person is not held accountable for tears of the eye or sadness of the heart due to the departure of a loved one, because Allah does not punish for tears of the eye or sadness of the heart. Crying and sadness do not contradict patience, and the reward is affirmed for whoever does not complain about Allah's decrees.

As for the breaking of the engagement, do not grieve over it; because the aforementioned young man is not satisfactory in his religion and character due to his negligence in prayer, his smoking, and his ill-treatment of you and your family. Islamic law encourages marrying a person of good religion and character, as stated in the Hadith: "If someone whose religion and character you approve of proposes to you, then marry him." Remember that what you dislike may be good for you, as Allah Almighty said: "And perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not."
