What is the ruling on disseminating unauthentic hadiths about the Messenger, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him?

It is not permissible to narrate fabricated hadiths about the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, except to clarify that they are fabricated. As for weak hadiths, a group of hadith scholars permitted their narration and acting upon them in matters other than beliefs and rulings. Some of them held the view that it is permissible to act upon them with certain conditions, while another group completely forbade it.
