What is the ruling on one who propagates fabricated hadiths about the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, whether intentionally or out of negligence in verifying their authenticity before publishing them, and how can friends be advised to desist from this act?

It is not permissible to disseminate fabricated hadiths except to show their falsity. Whoever does so intentionally has been warned by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said: "Whoever lies about me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Hellfire." And whoever narrates a hadith that he believes to be a lie is one of the liars. Therefore, one must verify a hadith before disseminating it, and a Muslim should advise his brethren and alert them to the danger of spreading fabricated hadiths.
