What is meant by supplicating after the prescribed prayers?

The meaning of supplication (du'a') "after the prayer" (dubur al-salat) has been previously clarified. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that it refers to supplication before the salutation (taslim) and after the tashahhud, and also after the salutation. He stated in "Al-Fatawa": "As for the hadith of Abu Umamah, 'It was asked, O Messenger of Allah, which supplication is most heard? He replied, 'In the last part of the night and after the prescribed prayers,' this should not be limited to what is after the salutation; rather, it must include what is before the salutation. And even if it is said that it encompasses both what is before the salutation and what is after it, this does not necessitate that the supplication of both the imam and the congregants together after the salutation is a sunnah, just as such is not necessary before the salutation. Rather, if each person supplicates alone after the salutation, this does not contradict the Sunnah... Furthermore, no Muslim has said that supplication after concluding the prayer is more emphasized and stronger than supplication within the prayer."
