The question

What is incumbent upon a mother who broke her fast in previous Ramadans due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and postpartum bleeding, knowing that she fed 60 poor people in one of those Ramadans, and she is now breastfeeding and suffering from anemia? Does she have to make up the days (qada'), feed the poor (it'am), or both?

The answer

If a woman breaks her fast due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation, or postpartum bleeding (nifas), she is obligated to make up the days she missed. Feeding the poor (it'am) is not a substitute unless one is permanently unable to fast, with no hope of recovery. If she is currently unable to fast due to weakness or illness that is expected to pass, she may delay making up the fasts until she is able to do so.
