Should one perform the Istikharah prayer before consulting and asking for advice or after making a decision? And what should the one performing Istikharah do if they do not feel a sense of relief or constriction, or see a vision? And should relief be prioritized over a vision if they contradict each other? And is one sinful if they ignore a vision and act contrary to it? And how does the one performing Istikharah ensure the impartiality of their desires in Istikharah?

Istikhara (seeking guidance from Allah) is recommended when one is indecisive about a matter. If, after performing Istikhara, no preference emerges, one should consult experts or entrust the matter to Allah, for whatever transpires thereafter is good. Istikhara should be performed before making a decision, and there is no need for it afterwards. It can be repeated, or one can seek consultation, or proceed with the matter, relying on Allah. If a dream contradicts a feeling of inner peace after Istikhara, one is not obligated to follow either, and should seek Allah's guidance again to choose between them. There is no sin upon one who follows either of the conflicting matters, and it is advised to fear Allah and not hesitate after resolving to do something and relying on Him.
