What is the ruling on veterinarians taking produce from farms they visit for work, and is it permissible for them to reduce service fees in exchange for this produce, and when is it lawful for them to accept gifts from farm owners and workers?

It is forbidden for an employee to accept gifts related to his job, because they are considered as ill-gotten gains (ghulūl). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified this in the story of Ibn Al-Lutbiyyah, when he said: "Why did he not sit in his father's house or his mother's house and see whether he would be given a gift or not?" An exception to this is a small amount given as hospitality, provided it does not lead to favoritism or a reduction in prices. It is not permissible to reduce prices for workers or farm owners who offer produce, nor for those who offer hospitality if it will lead to favoritism.

Accepting such gifts opens the door to bribery and favoritism.

Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy on him, affirmed that gifts given to workers are considered ill-gotten gains (ghulūl), and it is not permissible for an employee to take them; rather, he must return them.
