Peace be upon you. Are stimulant substances forbidden? Thank you.
The basic principle concerning foods and drinks is permissibility unless there is a textual prohibition from the Lawgiver () or if their harm is proven. Therefore, stimulants are permissible as long as they do not cause harm, intoxication (sukr), or languor (futur). If their harm is proven, or if they cause intoxication or languor, then they become forbidden, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm," and his prohibition of every intoxicant and every languid-inducing substance. Intoxication (sukr) is the confusion of speech and the alteration of the mind, while languor (futur) is that which causes numbness in the extremities.
