Why is there a difference in the number of verses in the Holy Qur'an, and was it not supposed that this difference should exist?

Scholars differed on the number of verses in the Qur’an, but they unanimously agreed that the number is six thousand verses. They had a slight disagreement on what exceeded that number. This difference in counting verses is not in the wording of the Qur’an. The reason for it is their differing views on some pauses, where some considered them a verse while others did not. Furthermore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would sometimes pause at the end of verses and sometimes connect them.
