Why are the surahs of the Holy Quran short?

The surahs of the Qur’an include long, medium, and short ones. Scholars have divided them into three sections: Al-Sab’ Al-Tiwal (The Seven Long Ones), from Al-Baqarah to At-Tawbah; Al-Mi’in (The Hundred-Verse Surahs), from Yunus to Al-Hujurat or Qaf; and Al-Mufassal (The Detailed Surahs), from Al-Hujurat to An-Nas. Al-Mufassal is further divided into: Tiwal Al-Mufassal (The Long Detailed Surahs), from Al-Hujurat to Abasa; Awsat Al-Mufassal (The Medium Detailed Surahs), from At-Takwir to Ad-Duha; and Qisar Al-Mufassal (The Short Detailed Surahs), from Ash-Sharh to An-Nas. The reason for a surah’s length or brevity cannot be explained, as its determination came through divine revelation from the Lawgiver.
