How can one act to attain God's pleasure and patience, in order to avoid falling into "minor sins" due to longing, especially when the family refuses to formalize the marriage contract despite the long engagement period and the fiancé's travel?
Fiancé and fiancée are considered strangers until the marriage contract is concluded. The engagement is merely a promise of marriage. Islamic law has forbidden seclusion (khalwa) and excessive looking and talking without necessity, as a preventative measure. Sincere repentance is obligatory, and the relationship must be severed, and the fiancé must not be allowed to be in seclusion until the marriage takes place. What helps in maintaining chastity is seeking Allah's help, being conscious of Him, avoiding everything that arouses desires, being keen on fasting, and occupying one's time with what is beneficial. It is recommended to expedite the marriage or at least the marriage contract. The family does not have the right to object to this without a legitimate reason. Allah may withdraw His blessings from His servant if they are ungrateful for them, as Allah Almighty says: "And Allah presents an example: a city that was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste the garment of hunger and fear because of what they used to do."
