Zakat must be calculated using lunar months, not solar months. If zakat has not been paid since 2010, one must repent and hasten to pay it for the previous years, by estimating the amount of wealth at the end of each Hijri year. The amount of zakat is one-fourth of one-tenth (2.5%). The general rule is for the wife to pay it from her own wealth. It is permissible for the husband to pay it on her behalf, provided she is informed and there is an intention for payment. There is no objection to paying zakat from money other than the specific wealth on which it was due. The majority of scholars do not obligate zakat on permissible jewelry intended for personal use, and this is the opinion followed in fatwas. However, paying zakat on it is more cautious.
