Is Zakat payable only on the increase in the value of gold jewelry that reached the Nisab threshold and on which Zakat was paid last year, or is it payable on the entire jewelry if its value increased this year?

If a wife acquires jewelry not for personal use, then its zakat is due on her without any dispute. However, if she acquires it for personal use, then according to the majority of scholars, there is no zakat on it. Some, however, are of the opinion that zakat is obligatory on it, and this is the view of Abu Hanifa. If she believes in the obligation of zakat or follows someone who issues a fatwa to that effect, then zakat becomes obligatory on her once it reaches the nisab (minimum threshold) and a hawl (one lunar year) has passed.

If she acquires additional jewelry during the hawl, it is more convenient to add it to what she already possesses and pay zakat on it when its hawl is due, or to establish an independent hawl for it. As for the opinion that only the zakat on the additional amount is obligatory, its basis might be the view of Malik that jewelry acquired for adornment is subject to zakat only once. However, this opinion is not apparent, as there is no zakatable asset that requires zakat only once, except for rikaz (buried treasure) and produce from the earth. Jewelry acquired for adornment is either gold, in which case zakat is due annually, or it is considered for personal use, becoming like clothing, in which case no zakat is due on it.
