Does zakat on a wife's gold become due every year, or just once in a lifetime?

Scholars have differed regarding the Zakat on jewelry intended for personal use. The majority opinion is that there is no Zakat on it, while others, like the Hanafis, hold that Zakat is obligatory on it. According to the view that Zakat is obligatory, it is due every year. There is also an opinion that it is obligatory only once in a lifetime. Whoever pays the Zakat has adopted the more cautious approach, and whoever does not pay it has a precedent among the Salaf for that.
