What is the religious ruling regarding a wife who betrayed her husband after swearing on the Qur’an to repent, and is it permissible to beat her?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a husband doubts the sincerity of his wife's repentance from grave evils she has committed, he should separate from her through divorce (talaq) or khula, because keeping her might diminish his religiosity and corrupt his household. In such a case, divorce might even become obligatory. The husband must conceal his wife's sin and not inform anyone about it, unless there is an overriding benefit in doing so. He may beat her, without causing injury, for these evils. He must ensure her chastity to the best of his ability and according to her need, and it is not permissible to abandon conjugal relations with her without a valid excuse, except for the purpose of discipline.
