Is it permissible for a woman to travel alone—without a mahram—to visit her family, given her family's extreme need for her, the impossibility of her husband traveling with her due to security conditions in their country, and knowing that a woman traveling alone is Islamically impermissible?

The majority of scholars hold that a woman's travel without a mahram (definition) is impermissible except in cases of necessity, such as migrating from a land of disbelief to a land of Islam. Some scholars have permitted travel that is safe, even if not for necessity, especially by airplane. So, if there is a need to travel and safety from suspicion is ensured, and a mahram is not available, there is no objection to adopting the view of those who permit it.
