The default ruling is the obligation to respect food fit for human consumption. If its expiry date has passed, there is no harm in using it in an industry from which benefit can be derived, such as ornaments, as long as it does not involve extravagance or spoilage. Nevertheless, it is recommended to use precious stones and valuable metals for adornment instead of food fit for human consumption, out of respect for food and to avoid extravagance.
