What is meant by "من يليه" (those next to him) in the definition of the lowest audible utterance (adna al-jahr) as being for the worshiper to hear himself and those next to him? And what are the sayings of the scholars of the madhahib (schools of thought) regarding the highest whisper (a'la al-sirr)? Is it for the worshiper to hear himself and those to his right and left as a maximum, or is it only for him to hear himself?

The jurists differed in defining the highest level of secrecy and the lowest level of audible recitation.

Ibn Abidin (Hanafi school) was of the opinion that the minimum level of recitation in a low voice is to make oneself or someone nearby hear it, and the maximum level is merely to pronounce the letters correctly. The minimum level of audible recitation is to make someone who is not nearby hear it.

The Shafi'is believe that secret recitation means making oneself hear it when there is no impediment, and audible recitation means making someone next to one hear it.

The Hanbalis said that the minimum level of audible recitation is to make oneself hear it, and the minimum level of audible recitation for the Imam is to make others hear it, even if it is only one person behind him.

Al-Kharashi (Maliki school) believes that the minimum level of secret recitation is to move the tongue with the recitation, and the maximum level is to make only oneself hear it. The minimum level of audible recitation is to make oneself and the person next to one hear it.

The preferred view is that the highest level of secret recitation is to make only oneself hear it, and the lowest level of audible recitation is to make oneself and the person next to one hear it, and this does not necessitate prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw).

The meaning of "the person next to one" is someone who is close to and adjacent to the worshipper.

If one's voice increases so that it is heard by someone further away by one row or more, then this is an increase that necessitates prostration of forgetfulness.
