Is it permissible for my sister, the teacher, to accept a gift of "incense" from a relative of one of the students, out of embarrassment from not doing so, while fearing it might be a bribe or ill-gotten gain, especially since it was presented on the occasion of "Teacher's Day"?

The general rule is that gifts are recommended and should not be refused, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Exchange gifts, and you will love one another," and "If I were given a foreleg or a shank as a gift, I would accept it." However, there are exceptions to this recommendation, such as giving a gift to a judge, in order to prevent bribery. A student's gift to a teacher, if intended to gain favor, is considered bribery and is forbidden for the teacher. But if it is not given with a bad intention, then it is not forbidden, and the recipient should reciprocate it. The sister should also be reminded that Teacher's Day is not one of the holidays of Muslims.
