What should children do with their mother who curses and insults them, and tries to assault them physically, and whose heart does not soften towards them, and how can they earn her pleasure?
Filial piety is obligatory, but obedience to parents is not obligatory if they command disobedience [to God], or if their command yields no benefit for them, or if it causes harm to the child. Allah Almighty said: "But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them, but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness." And it is obligatory to accompany them with appropriate kindness.
It is not appropriate to forsake one's mother, as her right is great. Communication with her can be maintained by phone or through infrequent visits, while enduring any harm she may inflict. Reducing visits is not considered disobedience if it is to avoid harm, especially if the mother does not request visits.
