It is the wife's right that her husband provides for her maintenance (nafaqa) in a reasonable manner. She is not obligated to spend on herself from her own private wealth, even if she is rich, unless she volunteers to do so. The money a woman earns from her work is her exclusive right, unless the husband stipulated a share of it in exchange for his permission for her to work, in which case she must fulfill the condition. The maintenance should be sufficient and reasonable, taking into account the circumstances of both spouses. Both spouses should understand each other and consider each other's circumstances. The husband should know that part of good companionship is to spend kindly on his wife and not to withhold from her what she requests for maintenance in permissible matters, because spending on one's family is among the greatest rewards.
