What is the interpretation of a Muslim man marrying a Christian woman, given that the noble verse states: "And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe," and His saying, the Most High: "And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion," noting the confusion of the children between the two religions?

The questioner's statement: "And no one marries a polytheist woman except a polytheist man," is not a Quranic verse. The correct verse is: {The fornicating woman, none shall marry her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that is forbidden to the believers.}

The verse intended by the question is: {And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheistic woman, even though she might please you.} Its meaning is a prohibition against marrying polytheistic women (idolaters), and that a believing woman is better than a polytheistic woman, because polytheistic women invite to the Fire. Allah has exempted the People of the Book (Jewish and Christian women) from this prohibition, as stated in His saying: {And [lawful for you are] the chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due bridal gifts, desiring chastity, not committing unlawful sexual intercourse.}

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did not marry a Christian or Jewish woman. Rather, Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab had embraced Islam before her marriage to him.
