Is it necessary to seek refuge with Allah from Satan every time one experiences an obsessive thought or compulsive action, or is it sufficient to simply ignore them? And does this apply to reciting the Qur'an or engaging in worldly activities, especially if seeking refuge itself becomes an obsession?

It is legislated for a person to seek refuge with Allah from Satan in all circumstances, especially when Satan whispers. Allah Almighty says: "And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing." One must cease indulging in whispers and seek assistance by seeking refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan. Abdullah ibn Masud, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Satan has a touch with the son of Adam, and the angel has a touch. As for the touch of Satan, it is a promise of evil and a denial of truth. As for the touch of the angel, it is a promise of good and an affirmation of truth. So whoever finds that [the touch of the angel], let him know that it is from Allah, and let him praise Allah. And whoever finds the other [the touch of Satan], let him seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Satan." And from Uthman ibn Abi al-As, who said: "I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, Satan has come between me and my prayer and my recitation, confusing them for me.' He said, 'That is a devil called Khanzab. So when you sense him, seek refuge with Allah from him and spit to your left three times.'" It is necessary to combine seeking refuge with ceasing to indulge in whispers, by occupying oneself with what is beneficial, such as beneficial knowledge, righteous deeds, productive service, or permissible recreation, and by associating with righteous companionship. Consulting a psychiatrist is also an option.
