Does the first pronouncement of divorce become void upon the wife's return after 24 hours, and if the husband divorces her again, is it considered the second or the first pronouncement?

If a man divorces his wife and then takes her back during her 'iddah (waiting period), the first divorce is counted and not nullified by the رجعة (return). If he divorces her a second time, two divorces are counted, and he may take her back during her 'iddah. If he divorces her a third time, it constitutes a final and irrevocable divorce (al-baynunah al-kubra), and she does not become lawful for him again until she marries another husband in a valid marriage of desire and he divorces her after consummation, based on Allah's saying: "Divorce is twice. Then, either keep [her] in kindness or [send her forth] with benevolence," until His saying: "And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until she marries another husband."
