What is the ruling on the prayer of young men whose lower backs, and perhaps the upper part of their major ‘awrah, are exposed due to saggy trousers and wearing a short shirt? And what is the ruling on their following fashion trends such as wearing gold accessories, tight trousers, unbuttoning shirt collars, letting their hair grow long and dyeing it, having strange haircuts, and printing pictures of celebrities or lips on their clothes?

We have previously clarified the ruling on the prayer of someone whose lower back is exposed. What is called "fashion" includes prohibited matters. Wearing a "hazaza" (a rubber bracelet for good luck) is forbidden because it falls under the general category of wearing amulets. An amulet brings no good and wards off no harm; good and harm are in the hand of Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, made the wearing of amulets a form of shirk (definition) (polytheism). Wearing a gold ring and watch is forbidden for men. A man wearing a necklace and bracelet is imitating women, which is forbidden. Shaving hair in a way that imitates disbelievers is forbidden, based on the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." Hanging pictures of singers and actors is forbidden because it glorifies transgressors. As for a man unbuttoning his shirt, it is permissible in principle, but if it becomes a custom of transgressors, it should not be done. Likewise, growing long hair is permissible, but it is subject to custom; if it becomes a symbol of transgressors, a Muslim should not do it. Young people should be advised to be proud of their religion and to beware of imitating the enemies of the Ummah.
