Is it permissible to pay the dowry in cash if its value was set in gold?
It is not obligatory to pay the dowry in gold if it was likewise stipulated as a debt. Rather, the spouses may agree to pay its value in the circulating banknotes, as they take the place of cash. Scholars have cited the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) as evidence for the permissibility of settling gold with silver and vice versa. He used to sell with dinars and take dirhams, and sell with dirhams and take dinars. The Prophet (peace be upon him) approved this by saying: "There is no harm in taking it at its value on that day, as long as you do not separate while there is still something between you." The condition for this exchange is that they do not separate while there is still something between them.
