We say: He fell into a state of "ḥaiṣ baiṣ," so what are "ḥaiṣ" and "baiṣ"?

The Arabs say: "He fell into hays bayṣ" concerning one who has fallen into distress and hardship from which he can find no way out. It is also said that his affairs became confused and entangled. Hays bayṣ is the hole of a mouse due to its narrowness.
