What is the recompense for a mother who reconciled her son and his wife after he had divorced her twelve times, knowing that the wife is pregnant? Is the child illegitimate? And what is the atonement for the mother, knowing that she is diligent in her prayers and fasting?
If a man divorces his wife three times, and these divorces are interspersed with revocations, then she becomes irrevocably separated from him (baynunah kubra) and is not lawful for him until she marries another husband. He must separate from her immediately. However, if the three divorces occur in a single session without revocation, there are two scenarios: First, if he intended to emphasize the first divorce, it is counted as a single divorce. Second, if he intended to initiate a new divorce, this is a matter of scholarly disagreement. In these cases, it is advisable to consult the court. As for the mother, there is no sin upon her if her intention was reconciliation and she was ignorant of the irrevocability of the separation. However, if she knew about the irrevocability and saw benefit in his return, then she incurs sin and must repent to Allah.
