What is the ruling on women working in the military where there is intermingling with men?

The Muslim woman has set wonderful examples in defending her religion and honor, and the participation of Umm Sulayṭ and Umm 'Umarah in fighting indicates the permissibility of women attending and engaging in battle. However, a woman is commanded to be cautious in covering herself and avoiding temptation. So, if she is compelled to work outside her home, she should not work in a place where she mixes with men. If the nature of her work necessitates dealing with men, it should be without mixing and with utmost caution, and she should be veiled with the legal hijab and dressed modestly. If she is compelled to speak to men, she should not speak in a soft, alluring voice.
