What is the meaning of the word "Islam"?

Religion was named Islam because the name signifies a characteristic encompassed by the word Islam, which is: submission, humility, obedience, surrender, and the unprotesting fulfillment of the Commander's (Allah's) command and prohibition. It also entails sincerity in worshiping Him, Glorified and Exalted be He, believing His message, and having faith in Him. It does not belong to a specific man or nation; rather, its ultimate goal is for all people on Earth to be adorned with it.
