What is the ruling on a relationship continuing between a young man and woman who have loved each other for 10 years, when the young man's family has refused their marriage? Is his insistence on marrying her considered disobedience to his parents? And what should they do after this long period of relationship?

Obedience to parents is obligatory, as Allah Almighty says: "Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The pleasure of Allah is in the pleasure of the parents, and the wrath of Allah is in the wrath of the parents." It is obligatory for the son to obey his father if he forbids him from marrying a specific woman. The son must try to appease his parents to marry whomever he desires. If they insist on refusing and the girl they wish him to marry possesses religiosity and good character, then it is preferable to comply with the parents' wish. However, if he fears harm to himself in his religion or worldly life by abandoning marriage to the one he loves who possesses religiosity and good character, then he may marry her even without their consent. But if he marries her, he must then strive to appease his parents by all means.
