The question

What should I do when I feel that my acts of obedience are nothing, and that they are an obligation upon me rather than an expression of gratitude, which sometimes leads me to aversion and fear of worship?

The answer

To overcome negative feelings, remember that Allah is Most Appreciative; He accepts little deeds and rewards them immensely. He has also made simple acts of obedience a means to enter His Paradise. Furthermore, He is pleased with His servant for praising Him after eating and drinking.

These attributes should drive you to love Allah and increase your obedience. Know that Allah is self-sufficient and has no need of your worship; your acts of obedience benefit you, just as your shortcomings harm you. Allah says: "And whoever withholds [out of greed] only withholds [benefit] from himself." (Quran 47:38). In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah says: "O My servants, it is only your deeds that I record for you, and then recompense you for them." Therefore, have a good opinion of Allah, abandon laziness and the whispers of Satan, and strive in obeying Him for your own salvation and success.
