Is it true that the sun and the moon will enter Hell on the Day of Judgment, and what is the reason for that?
The esteemed questioner referred to the Hadith narrated by Al-Bukhari from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The sun and the moon will be rolled up on the Day of Resurrection."
The meaning of "rolled up" (mukawwarān) is that their light will be extinguished and they will be folded up. Some scholars added, "They will be in the Fire," and Al-Albani authenticated this addition.
Scholars have addressed the meaning of their being in the Fire, among them Al-Khattabi, who said: The intent behind their being in the Fire is to rebuke and reproach those who worshipped them in this world, so that they may know that their worship of them was falsehood.
Al-Ismaili said: Their being placed in the Fire does not necessitate their torment, for Allah has angels and stones and other things in the Fire to be a torment for the people of the Fire.
Ibn Qutaybah said: The sun and the moon will not be tormented by the Fire; rather, they were created from it and then returned to it. He gave an example of a man who hears Allah Almighty's saying: "So fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones" [Al-Baqarah: 24], and says: "What is the fault of the stones?!"
