Is it permissible for a Muslim, male or female, to submit to a body scanner examination at airports that reveals details of the 'awrah (private parts), knowing that there is no other option for examination, and that refusing it would prevent them from traveling and lead to the loss of the ticket?

The Sharia has made it obligatory to safeguard private parts and prohibited looking at them, especially the grave ones. Therefore, it is not permissible to travel through airports where inspection devices that expose private parts are imposed, except in cases of extreme necessity. The Fiqh Council of North America has warned against these devices, emphasizing that they are against the teachings of Islam and modesty, and called for their modification to display the image as a body outline only, or to resort to alternative inspection. If these devices are developed to display unclear images or models instead of real images, with a guarantee that images are not stored or printed, then the matter would be easier. Until these controls are available, Muslims must not submit to these devices except out of extreme necessity.
