The question

Is it permissible to pay the monetary equivalent of feeding ten needy people instead of actually feeding them, for the oaths that have been broken? Is it permissible to pay this amount over time? And is fasting sufficient for the oaths that were broken, when there was no ability to make expiation at the time of breaking them?

The answer

Fasting is not sufficient for the expiation of an oath unless one is unable to feed, clothe, or free a slave. This inability is considered at the time of performance, not at the time of breaking the oath. According to Abu Hanifa and some verified scholars, it is permissible to pay the value of feeding in cash if it is more beneficial for the poor. The majority of scholars hold that it is not permissible to delay expiation without an excuse, while the Shafi'is believe it is obligatory with delay, and they stipulate immediate expiation if breaking the oath was an act of disobedience. Fasting as an expiation when one is unable to feed is sufficient in the Hanbali and Hanafi schools of thought.
