Is it permissible to perform Qunūt in Fajr prayer, taking into account the weakness of Anas's hadith which Sheikh Al-Albani cited as evidence, and how should one deal with elderly people who are not easily convinced in the Shafi'i madhhab?

Scholars differ on the permissibility of reciting Qunut in the Fajr prayer. The preponderant opinion is that it is not permissible, as the hadith (definition) used to support its permissibility is weak, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not consistently recite Qunut in Fajr or any other prayer.

If you are an Imam and hold the view that Qunut is not permissible, you may excuse yourself from leading the congregational Fajr prayer and explain your view to the congregants. However, if another Imam who believes in the permissibility of Qunut leads the prayer, then you should follow him.

Qunut may occasionally be permissible for the sake of uniting hearts and clarifying that the matter is one of scholarly disagreement. Therefore, an Imam should sometimes forgo what he considers preferable for the sake of agreement and unity.

You should be gentle with the elderly and clarify that the Sunnah (definition) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is more deserving of being followed, and that in matters of scholarly disagreement, one should not condemn those who hold differing views. Furthermore, explain that your view is based on the opinion of another Imam who is no less significant than the Imam they follow, while citing evidence from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and the sayings of the Imams.
