It is not permissible for a father to prevent his son from marrying a woman of good character and religious commitment if the son desires her, and if the son marries her, it is not considered an act of disobedience. However, if the proposed marriage is surrounded by problems and parental disapproval, the son should be cautious. If the parents insist on their refusal, it is preferable to abandon the marriage in obedience and dutifulness to them. As for a girl who is only engaged, prioritizing obedience to parents is more important, as there are many women. If the parents reject a marriage to a girl they deem unsuitable, it is advisable not to marry her, for obedience to parents is better. And a son abandoning his parents is considered an act of disobedience and severing ties.
