How do we reconcile the prohibition of transforming wine into vinegar with the Hadith: "Vinegar is an excellent condiment"?

It is narrated in the Hadith that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Vinegar is an excellent condiment." The vinegar referred to here is that which is not derived from wine. If vinegar is made from something other than wine, it is halal without dispute. If wine transforms into vinegar on its own, without intervention, it becomes pure and permissible. However, there is a difference of opinion regarding the deliberate transformation of wine into vinegar (takhleel al-khamr):

- Some scholars are of the view that it is not permissible to transform wine into vinegar, and that it must be poured away. This is the more preponderant opinion due to what was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding his command to pour away the wine of orphans and his prohibition of transforming it into vinegar.

- Others have held that it is permissible under certain conditions, or that the resulting vinegar is lawful even if the act of transformation is forbidden.

- Sheikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen chose the opinion that if wine is transformed into vinegar by someone who believes it to be permissible (such as the People of the Book or a Muslim who considers its transformation permissible), then the resulting vinegar is lawful and becomes permissible. Accordingly, vinegar imported from non-Muslim countries is halal for Muslims.
