Is it permissible to stand to bid farewell to a visitor, and is it considered reprehensible?

The hadith, "Whoever wishes for men to stand up for him, let him take his seat in Hellfire," applies to those who delight in people standing for them out of veneration. As for standing merely out of honor and respect, it is permissible and has been deemed commendable by some scholars. This is supported by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) act of standing to bid farewell to the Mother of the Believers, Safiyyah. Therefore, standing to welcome or bid farewell to a person is permissible if it is for honor and respect, and does not lead to any religiously forbidden act.
