What is the ruling on standing up when greeting an arriving person, whether they are Muslim or non-Muslim?

Scholars have divided standing for an arriving person into three categories: forbidden if the arriving person is arrogant, disliked if he is not arrogant but there is fear that he might become arrogant, and permissible if it is for shaking hands or taking his hand. Standing for an arriving person with the intention of shaking hands and showing cheerfulness is a Sunnah and a matter of good manners. However, if it is for glorification, then it is not permissible. And one should not stand for a disbeliever.
