Is a waiting period (iddah) or financial support (nafaqah) obligatory for a wife who has been left at her family's home for a year?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Allah has commanded the waiting period (iddah) for a woman, whether she is divorced or widowed. This is a right of Allah and does not lapse, even if the purity of the womb is known. An exception to this is a woman whose husband has not consummated the marriage; she does not have to observe an iddah. Therefore, if a woman is left with her family and then divorced or her husband passes away, she observes the waiting period starting from the day of the divorce or death. As for financial rights such as maintenance and housing, their details can be reviewed in Fatwa no. 6922.
