Is a waiting period (iddah) or financial support (nafaqah) obligatory for a wife who has been left at her family's home for a year?

Allah has commanded the waiting period (iddah) for a woman, whether she is divorced or widowed. This is a right of Allah and does not lapse, even if the purity of the womb is known. An exception to this is a woman whose husband has not consummated the marriage; she does not have to observe an iddah. Therefore, if a woman is left with her family and then divorced or her husband passes away, she observes the waiting period starting from the day of the divorce or death.
