The political system in Islam, known as Islamic politics (al-siyasa al-shar'iyya) or the laws of governance (al-ahkam al-sultaniyya), differs from Western democratic systems in the method of appointing and dismissing the Imam, and in its administrative arrangements. Muslim scholars have diligently expounded upon this system and included it in books of creed. There is no democracy in Islam in the Western sense, which grants absolute sovereignty to the people; however, the principle of shura (consultation) is one of the greatest principles upon which the Islamic system is built.
