Is not the Abrahamic prayer, with its addition of "and the family of Abraham and the family of Muhammad," a contradiction to His — Exalted be He — saying: "Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him and grant him peace"? And does our saying, "and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Abraham and the family of Abraham," constitute glorification of Abraham, peace be upon him, and raising him to a status higher than our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to differentiate in practice between what is mentioned in the Qur'an and the Sunnah; for the Prophet, peace be upon him, was given the Qur'an and something similar with it. The Sunnah clarifies and explains the Qur'an. An example of this is the manner of sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, which the Sunnah clarified after Allah's command to send blessings upon him was revealed. It was reported from Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari that the Prophet, peace be upon him, taught the Companions how to send blessings upon him by saying: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim among the worlds. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious."

As for the phrase "as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim" despite Muhammad being superior, Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar chose the interpretation that the particle kaaf (as) is for resemblance, and it is not a condition that the object of comparison be stronger. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen favored that the kaaf is for causation, not resemblance. It is for seeking intercession through Allah's past action (Allah's blessings upon the family of Ibrahim) to achieve the subsequent action (Allah's blessings upon the family of Muhammad).
