What is the Shariah ruling concerning a tribe that claims lineage to the Prophet's Household (Ahl al-Bayt), possesses a continuous chain of narration and preserved family trees, after DNA analyses have shown that they do not belong to the genetic lineage associated with most of those affiliated with the Prophet's Household?
Whoever's lineage ends with Banu Hashim or Banu Al-Muttalib is from the Ahl al-Bayt (the Household of the Prophet). Lineages are known through the family's or tribe's ancient claim to that lineage and by the knowledge of genealogists, whether through written documents (the family tree) or through inherited ancient possession. People are to be believed regarding their lineages.
If there is evidence proving your lineage to the Ahl al-Bayt, then DNA has no role in proving or disproving lineage. The DNA analysis that was conducted is not considered valid, and it is not permissible to deny lineage based on it. The fatwa of the Islamic Fiqh Council in Makkah has affirmed this meaning, stating that it is impermissible to rely on genetic fingerprinting to deny lineage, nor is it permissible to use it to confirm the validity of lineages that are legally established. Rather, it is used in cases of dispute over unknown parentage, suspicion of mixed-up newborns in hospitals, and cases of lost children and their mixing up due to accidents and disasters.
