The question

What should I do about the prayers I missed after purification, either due to delaying the ritual bath (ghusl) after menstruation or out of forgetfulness and ignorance on my part, given that I am not certain of their number or whether I performed them?

The answer

Prayer holds a great status in Islam; it is the first act of a servant to be examined. Neglecting prayer and occasionally abandoning it is a heinous sin. Some scholars have even stated that whoever intentionally misses a single prayer commits an act of disbelief.

Prayers missed during menstruation are not to be made up. However, prayers that become due after the cessation of blood and before performing ghusl (ritual bath) must be made up. For instance, if purity is attained before sunset, both the Dhuhr and Asr prayers should be made up together. Similarly, if purity is attained before Fajr, both the Maghrib and Isha prayers should be made up.

All prayers that were obligatory to be made up must be performed. If the exact number is unknown, one must continue making them up until it is highly probable that one's obligation has been fulfilled. Given the presence of obsessive thoughts (waswas), it is advisable to ignore them and not pay attention to them as a form of remedy.
