It is forbidden for a creditor to delay a debtor in repaying a debt, as this incurs sin, and scholars have considered it one of the major sins.

This delay justifies the creditor taking the matter to court and demanding their right, if there is no other recourse. It is permissible to take from the debtor's money, without their knowledge, an amount equal to the right.

Debts must be documented in writing, witnessed, and the amount taken from the money must be documented. Forgiving a debt yields a greater reward.
