What is the ruling of Sharia regarding a husband who swore by triple divorce upon his daughter that she should not contact her friends, nor accompany them, nor disobey his words, otherwise she would not complete her studies? And does the divorce take effect if: one of them contacts her, or she contacts them with just a ring, or she greets them coincidentally in the street? And is it counted as a single divorce or three if the divorce takes effect, given his statement "divorced by three"?

The father's statement to his daughter, "You will be divorced by three," if intended as a promise of divorce, does not necessitate a divorce. However, if he intended to effectuate the divorce immediately, then it constitutes a triple divorce according to the majority of scholars, and a single divorce according to Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah if he intended divorce. If he did not intend divorce, then he owes expiation for breaking an oath.

If the father intended to prevent his daughter from associating with males, then nothing is incumbent upon him if she associates with females. If he intended females, and she did not contact them, or merely made a missed call, or greeted them without intention, then reference is made to the father's intention in his oath, for an oath's basis is the intention of the swearer.
