What is the ruling on not performing the prayer unintentionally due to the long distance between one's place of residence and study?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
Abandoning prayer is a grave sin. Distance or study are not justifications for abandoning it. The distance that permits shortening prayers (qasr) does not permit abandoning them, and study is not an excuse for abandoning prayer. Performing prayer aids in study, as Allah Almighty says: "And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect." Whenever the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was troubled by an affair, he would pray. Therefore, there is no justification for abandoning prayer, no matter how great the hardship, as long as the accountable person is of sound mind.
