Is it authentically reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he specified symptoms for those afflicted by sorcery or the evil eye, or is what is mentioned in some books—such as seeing dogs, snakes, or scorpions in dreams—considered true?

A person afflicted by magic often exhibits symptoms such as inability to have intercourse with his wife, imagining things that did not happen, and excessive forgetfulness. This is what happened to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he was bewitched; it was made to appear to him that he was doing something which he had not done, and that he was approaching women when he was not. The symptoms may also be internal, such as dream visions. However, these symptoms do not definitively and certainly indicate the presence of magic, as many people display similar symptoms without being bewitched.
