What is the meaning of the Hadith: "Let the provision of any of you from this world be like the provision of a rider," and does it mean asceticism (Zuhd)? Is it obligatory to follow it? The meaning of the Hadith: Contentment with little of this world, and it encourages asceticism, but it does not mean abandoning earning and dedicating oneself solely to worship. Verses and Hadiths have urged working and earning a lawful livelihood, and work becomes worship if one intends thereby obedience to Allah and providing for oneself and one's family, as the Prophets and Companions did. Asceticism does not mean forbidding what is lawful or squandering wealth; rather, it is the heart's trust in what is with Allah and its desire for the reward of afflictions.
